Looking back on 52 in 23*

Monday, January 30, 2012

Let's talk stock of the 2011 52 in 23* failure list.  I'd been trying to update this list throughout the year, but here's the final score score:

Done: 20/52 = 39%
Not done, with reason: 7/52 = 13%
Not done, no reason: 25/52 = 48%

...and if I remember correctly from my policy debate days, Ullo vs. Smith determined that 20% qualifies something as substantial, so yes, I completed a substantial portion of my 2011 list.  Be back another day with the list of awesome, non-list things from 2011.

*****

Color codes: pink=done, blue=not done without reason, grey=not done with reason

Running (4-4)

  1. Run the Hyannis Half Marathon. (2/27/11)
  2. Run the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon. (5/7/11)
  3. Run the Boston Half Marathon. (Did not sign up, as I know I will not have time to train properly.)
  4. Get my minute/mile pace under 10 minutes. You know what, I'm giving myself this one because I ran the first half of the Mini at about a 9 minute/mile average pace.  So yeah, CHECK and CHECK.
Football (3-7)
  1. Go to an Indianapolis Colts game in Indianapolis, IN. (September AND November)
  2. Go to an Indianapolis Colts game not in Indianapolis, IN. (October)
  3. Go to a college football game.
Trips (6-13)
  1. Visit my friend in Denver.  (Friend no longer lives in Denver.)
  2. Visit my cousin and friend in Washington, DC. (2/3-2/6/11)
  3. Visit my cousins and friend in Chicago.  (August)
  4. Take a road trip to someplace besides Indianapolis, Chicago, or DC.  (No time!)
  5. Visit my #2. - (Timing never really worked out, but I did try.)
  6. Visit my penpal. - She never seemed interested whenever I brought it up.  Marking this one as a "with reason".
New York (5-18)
  1. Attend a Broadway show (musical). (12/11/10, saw Chicago)
  2. Attend a Broadway play. (1/4/11, saw Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice)
  3. Go to a New York Yankees game.
  4. Go to the Bronx Zoo. (4/30/11)
  5. Go to a Giants game.

  2. See a non-Transformers 3 movie in a movie theater. (1/26/11, saw The King's Speech)
  3. Watch the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in one day. - Marking this one as "with reason" because I did this JUST before I embarked on this list.  How many times a year can one do this?
  4. Watch the entire series of Frasier, from beginning to end, in order. - NO TIME, but I didn't really try.
Other (14-52)
  1. Go to the "Race to the End" exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. (12/31/10)

  3. Organize my entire music library.
  4. Go to Texas de Brazil. (7/15/11)
  5. Finish LEGO Star Wars with Marek (starting from the beginning). - Made a lame attempt.
  6. Join the LSA. - Still grappling with paying $95 for a membership that really only gets me a subscription to their journal.  Since I'm not active in the field (and won't be for the foreseeable future, that's a steep amount to pay for basically a magazine subscription).
  7. Lose 10 pounds.
  8. Set up my photography website.
  9. Have a date night with my best friend.
  10. Order another CanvasPop. - Darn, ordered one for Marek for Christmas, which was after the deadline.  BOO!!!!

  14. Buy a Clarisonic.  (Have decided not to spend $200 on something I will not use.)

10 Day You Challenge: five foods

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

(ten secrets / nine loves / eight fears / seven wants / six places)

So.... I didn't forget about this!

I love eating.  These are (some of) my favorite foods.

1.  Potatoes.  I love potatoes.
No such thing as a bad potato...
...but I am partial to Russets

I'll take them roasted, mashed, smashed, boiled, baked, sauteed, Hasselback-ed (Swedish, LIKE ME)...

Hasselback Potatoes, OMG

... fried, scalloped, au gratin-ed, shredded, hash brown-ed, home fried,duchess-ed...

Duchess Potatoes, OMG
 ...any way, really.

2.  The genus Allium.  That is -- garlic, onions, leeks, chives, shallots, scallions.  The phrase "garlic-crusted" (or "garlic-rubbed") gets me every time.

3.  Cheese.  I debated putting this on here because I am fiercely loyal to two specific kinds of cheeses: Cheddar

The sharper the better!
 and Parmiggiano Reggiano.
>>>>> Kraft Parmesan bottle
4.  Bread.  One of my favorite parts of dining out is the bread basket... provided it's good bread.  My favorites are nice, crusty loaves or rolls.  I also love sourdough and anything covered in sesame seeds.

 5.  Butter.  Because, you know, things taste better with butter.

Runner-Ups
Mushrooms
Bacon
Chocolate
Milk
Ice Cream
Fresh herbs (thyme, dill, cilantro, flat parsley, rosemary)

Yawn...how original, right?
